We install every gold rush and Wild West title ourselves, play past the tutorial and write down what the store page never tells you: how long a session really runs, how the controls feel, and whether it works with the signal switched off.

Each entry below was installed from Google Play in Canada, opened on a mid-range Android phone and played for at least two sittings. The star figure is the Google Play rating as displayed at the time of testing; the written verdict is ours.

A homestead laid out on cracked prairie hardpan and worked from a tilted overhead camera: you walk a ranch hand between the corrals, top up the feed troughs, gather what the pens produce and carry it to the wagon before the next plot opens. Cattle sheds, horse pens and a wooden main street grow one square at a time, and the flat ground keeps the whole yard readable at a glance. Everything is done by holding a finger on the screen, which makes it an easy title to play standing up. Advertising breaks arrive between upgrades often enough to notice.

A first-person claim staked between red canyon walls: you start with a shovel and a washing sluice, then unlock a loader and an excavator and move the same pile of dirt with proper machinery instead. Each machine has its own levers along the edge of the screen, so the opening hour is mostly learning where to park and where to stand. Between shifts you furnish a small clapboard house of your own, which is where the desert scenery is at its best. It is the heaviest install of the four and wants a phone with room to spare.

A drawn-by-hand ranch seen from above: stables, paddocks and a round training ring sit among the fields that feed them, and orders from the neighbouring town set the day's list of jobs. Pairing two horses gives a foal that inherits its markings from both, and that breeding line is what the longer goals are built around. The board fills up quickly, but tapping any building states plainly what it is waiting for. Progress is kept on the studio's servers, so it is a title for the sofa rather than the tunnel.

One table, dressed as a frontier saloon: carved wood and patterned panels, a cactus at the rail and a lit marquee across the top. The physics carry it — the ball has real weight, the flippers answer without delay and the camera can follow play or sit still. There is only that single table, though, and the surrounding menus look every year of their age. At 3.7 it holds the lowest average score in this catalogue, and our panel lists it as a well-made curiosity rather than a headline title.

How to start without wasting an evening

Four steps we follow ourselves whenever a new frontier title lands in the test queue.

    Read the panel line first

    Every entry states genre, session length, offline behaviour and control style before a single adjective appears. If the session length does not match your evening, stop there.

  2. 2

    Open the store page

    Check the download size, the requested permissions and the content rating on Google Play. A frontier builder that wants half a gigabyte is a different proposition on a commuter train.

  3. 3

    Give it fifteen minutes

    Play past the guided intro with notifications off. Idle titles reveal their real rhythm only after the first pause, and timing arcades show their difficulty curve by the fourth level.

  4. 4

    Come back and compare

    Return to the catalogue and read the verdict again. Our notes flag what shifts after the tutorial, so you can tell a slow burner from a title that simply ran out of ideas.

Why trust our panel

  • Every title is installed, not summarised

    We do not rewrite store blurbs. Each entry comes from at least two sittings on a mid-range Android device, including one session with the connection switched off.

  • The same checklist for all four

    Session length, control style, offline behaviour, readability of the interface and how fast the first real decision arrives. The checklist is fixed before a game is opened.

  • Ratings quoted, never adjusted

    Store figures are reproduced exactly as published by Google Play. If a rating shifts between our test and your visit, the store page wins and we update the entry.

  • Advertising sits outside the verdict

    Promotional placements are marked where they appear, and a placement never buys a place in the catalogue, a kinder note or a higher position on the page.

How this site works

What we do

FPSPanel is an independent editorial desk based in Canada. We look for lesser-known free-to-install games about the gold rush and the American frontier, install them from Google Play, and publish a short, structured verdict for each one.

What it gives you

A filtered shelf instead of an endless store feed. Every entry states up front how long a session runs, whether it works offline and how the controls behave, so an evening is not spent on installs that were never going to fit.

How it is supported

Reading is free. The desk is supported by advertising placements, by promoted links that point to Google Play listings, and by the optional site plans described above. Promoted placements are labelled wherever they appear.

What never changes
